Belgian National Orchestra, González‐Monjas & Chamayou
Brussels, Palais des Beaux‐Arts — Henry le Boeuf Hall
About the Event
Experience the exquisite strains of classical music from Richard Strauss, Richard Dubugnon, Saint‐Saëns Camille, and Lili Boulanger at the esteemed Palais des Beaux‐Arts in Brussels. The creation of Saint‐Saëns' Second Piano Concerto was rushed composed in just three weeks at Anton Rubinstein's bidding. Its first performance, with Saint‐Saëns himself at the piano, was disastrously under‐rehearsed. Despite this rocky start, the concerto now stands as the most celebrated among his five.
Richard Strauss, though writing centuries after the heyday of the 'Viennese Waltz', infused much of this dance music into the latter acts of Der Rosenkavalier. Initially, critics frowned upon this temporal mismatch but the allure of Strauss' compositions won over audiences, leading to an enchanting orchestral suite distilled from the opera's highlights.
