Arctic Philharmonic: The Arctic Suite

About the Event

How does it feel to be at the North Pole? Wind, cold, snow? And, of course, ice everywhere… Travel to this special place tonight and through music and light experience the power of the sun, the darkness of the long winter and of course the beautiful northern lights! Christiaan van Kuyvenhoven is your tour guide and will talk about the history of (Dutch) polar travel and the importance and fragility of the eco‐system there, among other things. The Norwegian symphony orchestra Arctic Philharmonic and violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing will play music from the album Arctic (The Arctic Suite).

Arctic Suite
At first glance, the Arctic seems like a quiet landscape where nothing happens. Appearances can be deceiving. Under the snow, behind the icebergs and in the icy waters, there is constant movement. Internationally awarded violinist Eldbjorg Hemsing brings the beauty of this largely undiscovered, fragile ecosystem to life on a musical journey to the Arctic Circle. The centerpiece is her album Arctic (The Arctic Suite), featuring compositions by Jacob Shea (The Blue Planet) and Frode Fjellheim (Frozen), among others.

Arctic Philharmonic
The epic vistas of the Arctic are translated with the help of a spectacular light show and the Arctic Philharmonic, the most northerly‐based professional orchestra in the world. The symphony orchestra hails from Bodø and Tromsø, two Norwegian cities above the Arctic Circle, and focuses on Norway's rich culture with modern performances. The long polar nights, the Northern Lights and the local culture of the Arctic region play an important role in the orchestra's artistic vision. Presenter this evening is Christian Kuyvenhoven.
