Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci: Arena di Verona

About the Event

In this highly‐anticipated concert, hear the mellifluous sounds of opera music by Mascagni and Leoncavallo, staging of the two masterworks at Verona's treasured and world‐renowned Arena di Verona.

Cavalleria Rusticana

Cavalleria Rusticana is an Italian opera by Pietro Mascagni. Premiered in 1890, the work is considered a classic of the verismo movement, which aimed to depict the lives of ordinary people on stage. Set in a Sicilian village, Turiddu has seduced and then abandoned Santuzza, before beginning an affair with his old love, the now‐married Lola.

Pagliacci

Pagliacci — an opera in two acts with a prologue. Composed, like 'Cavalleria Rusticana' for a competition in 1890, it waited until 1892 for its premiere. Since then, under the baton of Toscanini, it has enjoyed great popularity and has been staged with great success to this day. Set in the south of Italy it tells the story of Canio, the chief traveling comedian, Nedda's jealous husband, to whom the comedian Tonio is recommended. Meanwhile, Nedda loves young Silvia and wants to escape with him. It is a tragic story of love, jelousy and loss.

Arena di Verona

The Arena di Verona is the third largest Roman amphitheatre still standing. Built around 30 AD, the Arena is also among the best‐preserved amphitheatres of the period. Its gigantic dimensions 140 meters long and 100 meters wide, and seating for over 30,000 spectators, ensure it dominates the northern part of Piazza Bra. Excellent acoustics and a fabulous location make it an ideal venue for large‐scale opera performances. The monument was re‐established as a theatre during the Renaissance, and in 1913 the tradition of opera at the Arena di Verona began with a production of Giuseppe Verdi's 'Aida'.
