Boris Godunov: Opera by Mussorgsky

About the Event

Allow yourself to be reminded that truth, honor, and the burden of power are ageless, in Mussorgsky's great political opera. Peter Konwitschny makes an overdue debut at the Vienna Volksoper in a new production, featuring Albert Pesendorfer in the title role.

The Tsar is dead, long live the Tsar! But who should that title belong to? The nobleman Boris, favored by the police, but suspected of killing the son of the former Tsar in his quest for power, and seemingly reluctant to take the throne? The man who proclaims himself to be that 'murdered' heir, miraculously hale and hearty? What is truth, and what falsehood? Does power inevitably corrupt? Mussorgsky's themes are as potent now as at the times of the opera's composition, and the historical events that inspired it.

Sung in German, with German subtitles.
