Blendulf conducts Franck

About the Event

Relish the unusual blending of cyclic form and Germanic sound in César Franck's only mature symphony. Swedish conductor Daniel Blendulf, whose star is ascending rapidly in the conducting world, leads the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic.

The symphony is a rare beast in the French nineteenth century tradition. Composing in a form regarded by his contemporaries as inescapably 'German', Franck went against convention in choosing a decidedly Teutonic sound world for his work, though he simultaneously embraced the French cyclical form. This blending of worlds underpins Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir's 'Aeriality' — even in the title, which combines the surreal world of the aerial glider with earthbound reality.
