Bernstein's Mass at L'auditori de Barcelona

About the Event

The Barcelona Symphony Orchestra performed this monumental work by Bernstein for the first time two years ago. Seats were sold out and it was an undisputed success. The centenary of the American composer’s birth gives us the ideal opportunity to revisit the work, led by the same conductor who premiered it in Barcelona.

The groundbreaking nature of both the music and the lyrics make this programme one of the season’s unmissable highlights.Bernstein’s Mass is a highly unconventional work that blends the spirituality of liturgical texts with the theatricality of the American musical. It was originally commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy for the opening of the J.F.K. Center for the Performing Arts in Washington in 1971. It is a spectacular, monumental work with an orchestra of over 100 musicians, including a rock band, keyboards, percussionists, three choirs and a soloist. The last words of the piece, sung by the celebrant, are unambiguous: “The Mass is ended go in peace.”

Superb. For someone who sings in a choir to hear the three choirs together — musical theatre, traditional and children’s was a special pleasure.
