Bösendorfer Series: Hannes Minnaar

About the Event

Immerse yourself in the stunning architecture of Amsterdam's breathtaking De Waalse Kerk for the ultimate concert set to awake your understanding of music.

This evening Minnaar brings Schubert's Wandererfantasie to the atmospheric ambiance of the Walloon Church. The four‐movement work is based on a song Schubert wrote in 1816 to a text by Georg Philipp Schmidt von Lübeck (1766‐1849). The song describes a 'wandering man' who seeks happiness but cannot find it anywhere. Happiness seems to be where he is not. The four‐movement piano solo is widely considered Schubert's most technically demanding piano composition. Schumann's 4 Nachtstücke (1839) were written under somber circumstances, deeply shaken by the news that his brother was dying. Upon publication, three‐quarters of a year later, he described the work as a 'pleasant memory' of his now‐deceased brother.
Chopin's 24 Preludes cover the second part of the evening. Chopin dedicated them to his friend and pianist Camille Pleyel, family of the famous piano builder Pleyel. In his Preludes, writes biographer Camille Bourniquel, Chopin 'gave the most comprehensive overview of all his faculties, ideals and desires, without making a fool of himself or repeating himself. Each time he penetrates to the core of his humanity.' The best‐known of the 24 is undoubtedly the Raindrop Prelude, but Hannes will play for you the complete cycle, from seemingly simple to not to be underestimated and highly virtuosic.
Press and audiences describe Hannes Minnaar as a pianist who knows how to convey the essence of the music. They praise his spontaneity, natural playing and casualness, which does not get bogged down in superficiality.
