Valery Polyansky

Conductor

Born in 1949, Valery Polyansky studied choral conducting with B. I. Kulikov and orchestral conducting with O. Dimtriadi. In 1977, he assisted Rozhdestvensky at the Bolshoi Theatre in a production of Shostakovich's Katerina Ismailova, which was a huge success, and would prove to be the springboard for his Russian and international career. Since 1992 Polyansky has been the principal conductor and artistic director of the State Symphony Capella of Russia. A rare example of an artist who skilfully combines the techniques of choral and orchestral conducting, Polyansky records profusely under the most notable labels, most notably compositions by Russian composers as well as Rachmaninov’s complete choral and orchestral works.
