Ahmed Adnan Saygun is one of the most important of Turkish composers. His music, which includes symphonies, piano concertos and choral works, is colourful and atmospheric and marries sympathetically the tradition of western classical music to the fertile heritage of Turkish folk music. The result is a richly appealing synthesis of pulsatinng rhythm and sensuous melody in which Saygun's vivid orchestrations play a significant part in achieving an alluring aural tapestry.
