Ensemble Zarabanda

The most famous Spanish early music ensemble Zarabanda was founded by Alvaro Marías in 1985. It has appeared in Europe, South‐America, Korea, etc, including at Wigmore Hall with singers Teresa Berganza, James Bowman, Charles Brett, Paul Esswood, Michael Chance, Jennifer Smith and many others. Zarabanda has recorded for such record labels as Philips, Erato and Warner. The last CD is dedicated to the music of Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverde – the most important composer of the Spanish golden era. “Alvaro Marías’ flute sounds like a song” are the words of Teresa Berganza. In addition to performing, Alvaro Marías actively promotes Baroque music over the radio, writes essays, articles and analyses interpretation problems of the early music and is also a teacher.
