Wolfram Christ’s name is closely associated with an intensive and successful involvement with music at the highest levels. Among the few violists with an international reputation as a soloist, he has increasingly turned to conducting in the last years.
He has conducted the Baseler Kammerorchester, Switzerland and the Muenchener Kammerorchester, Germany; he is also a regular guest with the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, Germany.
An acclaimed violist, he performs regularly at international concerts and has a repertoire that ranges from Baroque to the avant‐garde. Together with the Berliner Philharmoniker, where he was the principal violist for over 20 years, Christ has performed over 60 solo concerts with conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Bernhard Haitink and Seiji Ozawa. Numerous award winning CD‐recordings document the productive collaborations including the Grand Prix du Disques for the recording of Debussy’s Trios for Flute, Viola and Harp as well as a Grammy for the recording of Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 5 for Viola and Chamber Orchestra.
