László Fassang

Soloist

One of the pre‐eminent organists of his generation, Hungarian‐born László Fassang graduated from the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest and the Paris Conservatory, where he dedicated a considerable amount of time to improvisation. In 2000, Fassang took a sabbatical year to become resident organist at the Sapporo Concert Hall (Japan). Here, he recorded a CD on the Kern organ, which included works by Bach and Liszt as well as his own improvisations. Within the last decade, Fassang acquired international acclaim with numerous awards, most notably the Gold Medal for improvisation at the Royal Bank Calgary International Organ Festival and Competition (2002) and the Grand Prize at the Chartres International Organ Competition (2004). The numerous contests have won him the repute of an accomplished improviser and an excellent interpreter of French organ music. In 2006 he received the Franz Liszt Prize awarded by the Hungarian Ministry of Education and Culture.

Fassang holds concerts in Europe, Japan and the USA and teaches improvisation at the San Sebastian College of Music. As an extremely flexible musician, Fassang continues to play classical works, but is particularly interested in exploring the world of improvisation, in order to demonstrate the versatility of the organ using different styles of music, such as jazz and folk music. With this aim in view, he also performs concerts with jazz and ethno musicians, and records profusely across various genres.
