Andris Nelsons conducts the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra

About the Event

Succumb to the musical passions of this legendary orchestra and the charismatic conductor who leads them. Nelsons conducts Tchaikovsky, Mozart, and the Netherlands premiere of a new work by the latter's countryman, acclaimed Austrian composer Thomas Larcher.

Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony, the Pathétique has long labored under a mistranslation of its sobriquet. The intended meaning of the title Tchaikovsky attached to his last symphony was 'Passionate', rather than the pity‐inducing French title that has nonetheless survived! Likewise, Mozart's Symphony No. 40 is inescapably passionate in nature, though in the case of the 'Great G minor' symphony, piteous tragedy is never far removed from the composer's mind. Some of Larcher's most successful — often topical — works have also dealt memorably with tragedy, and a new work from this composer is always an intriguing prospect.
