Aida: Estonian National Opera

About the Event

Experience Verdi's masterwork in a production by German stage director Tobias Kratzer.

'If anyone had told me a few years ago that I would write an opera for Cairo, I would have said he was mad,” wrote Verdi in 1870. Nevertheless, the madness became reality and the Egyptian viceroy Ismael Pasha commissioned an opera from Verdi, who, at the time, was at the height of his career.

The Egyptians are at war with the Ethiopians. Radames, the leader of the Egyptian army, is in love with a war prisoner, Ethiopan princess Aida, who has to choose between the love for her country and the love for Radames. The daughter of the pharaoh, Amneris, is also in love with Radames. As a punishment for his forbidden love, Radames is claimed a traitor and enclosed in his forefathers’ tomb.
