The subject of numerous films and television plays over the decades since its premiere, Millöcker's work focuses on 'Gasparone' — a wild Sicilian bandit, who doesn't actually exist. The pseudonym of a mild‐mannered but struggling innkeeper, the wicked smuggler is an apt scapegoat for the misadventures of a whole cast of characters.
