Theater an der Wien

Theater an der Wien, Vienna, Austria
Theater an der Wien, Vienna, Austria

As one of the oldest and most beautiful theaters in Vienna, the THEATER AN DER WIEN experienced a series of premieres of major stage plays and legendary stage appearances by many great artists.

The premiere of Beethoven's Fidelio was held in the THEATER AN DER WIEN in 1805. The great folk actors and darlings of the public, Ferdinand Raimund and Johann Nestroy, performed as actors and produced their plays here. In 1874, the premiere of "Fledermaus" staged the beginning and the peak of the "Golden Viennese Operetta". One generation later in 1905, with his "Merry Widow", Franz Lehár started the era of the "Silver Operetta" which among others, Emmerich Kálmán kept it alive for decades with his "And Paul Abraham" and "The Flower of Hawaii".

For ten years after the Second World War, the THEATER AN DER WIEN was the venue of the Viennese National Opera. In 1955, the THEATER AN DER WIEN was taken over by the city of Vienna and totally renovated. It was first used by the Youth Theatre, but soon the program included operettas such as "The Merry Widow" and more frequently musicals, for instance ANATEVKA, THE MAN FROM LA MANCHA, EVITA and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.

Under the direction of Peter Weck Andrew, Lloyd Webber's CATS was staged in 1983. Since then the THEATER AN DER WIEN has become Vienna's most well-known theater for major musical productions. In 1987 it was merged with the RAIMUND THEATER and the ETABLISSEMENT RONACHER, into the VEREINIGTEN BÜHNEN WIEN [UNITED THEATRES OF VIENNA]. In the following year the Broadway hit PHANTOM OF THE OPERA held its German-language premiere. FREUDIANA, the first major musical production of the UNITED THEATRES OF VIENNA was premiered in 1990. The premiere of ELISABETH, the most successful German-language musical of all time, followed in 1992. After the successful performance of the Broadway production of CHICAGO, the premiere of the musical MOZART was held in 1999, followed by JEKYLL & HYDE and the anniversary production of ELISABETH in October 2003.
Today Vienna is a musical metropolis of worldwide notoriety. Thousands of visitors come to the city every year to see a Viennese musical. Today the THEATER AN DER WIEN is Vienna's most well-known theater, internationally known as a modern popular musical theater.
