Beethoven's Overture to Collin's (rather than Shakespeare's) play Coriolan is dramatic and contrasted. Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1 is one of the most popular of such works, brimful of romantic melody and impetus — an evergrenn of delights. Mendelssohn's 'Scottish' Symphony was inspired by a visit to Holyrood Castle in Edinburgh and is dedicated to Queen Victoria. The work's four linked movements are atmospheric, outgoing, eloquent and majestic, occasionally making reference to Scottish melodies and composed with consummate craftsmanship.
