“I have a song to sing, O…” Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard is one of the best‐loved of British comedies, packed with mock‐Tudor wordplay, topsy‐turvy plot‐twists, and infectiously hummable tunes. Yet with its story of love and loss under the shadow of the executioner’s block, it’s actually the pair’s darkest show, with a bittersweet sting in the tail. It might just be the greatest British opera of the 19th century – and with John Wilson on the podium, you’ll be bowled over. Whether you’re a lifelong Savoyard or a G&S virgin, this semi‐staged performance (in full costume) should be a magnificent salute to a true British masterpiece.
