Lo Sposalizio is a major Venetian ceremony that is still celebrated today on the feast of the Ascension. With great pomp and ceremony, the Doge "weds" the sea by throwing a gold wedding ring into it from his boat - symbolising La Serenissima's supremacy over the Adriatic. The King's Consort reconstructs Venice's wedding with the sea, as celebrated in the late 16th century.
