Genia Kühmeier and Bernarda Fink will perform vocal duets from the Romantic era, with piano accompaniment by Anthony Spiri in Brussels' Royal Theatre "La Monnaie".

It appears to be an incontrovertible premise that the 19th-century song is only served through the expression of a single vocal soloist and their accompanist, yet this fails to recognise the many works written for two singers. Dvorák’s Moravian Duets, for example, are absolute gems, rightly described by Johannes Brahms as sensually stimulating. In fact Brahms showed himself to be just as lively and inventive in his duets. Like Dvorák, he drew his inspiration from popular poetry, which he set exuberantly to music. Robert Schumann was a master of miniature-painting: in each one of these concentrated duets he repeatedly found that unique balance between atmosphere and expression, lyricism and profundity.
