Cellists tend to divide composers into two categories: those with a cello concerto to their name and those without.

But authorship of a cello concerto is just about the only thing that unites the Romantic Schumann and the post-modern minimalist Philip Glass. And yet...is that gently insistent theme that pervades Schumann's one-movement Fourth Symphony not an early precursor of the rhythmic obstinacy of the minimalists, a full century later? No point asking Debussy to provide a historical link between the two: his Nocturnes are a world apart - a world in which obstinacy does not exist.
