Ever since Haydn's day, the string quartet has been prestigious, and considered a true test of the classical composer's art. A curious phenomenon was seen in composers who wrote only one quartet, perhaps to show that they could fully command this hallowed genre. Nevertheless string quartets served also in the 20th century as a key to the composer's soul. Arnold Schoenberg, Bela Bartok, and Dmitri Shostakovich especially use the intimate character of the quartet to find expressions for their musical and human legacy.

The ensembles in these series are among the most gifted ensembles in the world of classical music. The program consists of works of all periods of musical history and shows the continuity of a musical genre through the centuries.
