A PROPOS DU SPECTACLE

A spectacular cast performs in Giuseppe Verdi's monumental opera, Aida, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

Aida is set in Egypt in the days the great pharaohs. The Egyptians are at war with the Ethiopians, who are threatening to invade them. The Egyptian army is victorious and Amonasro, the king of Ethiopia, is captured. Against this background Radames, the Egyptian commander, and Aida, an Ethiopian slave who is also Amonasro's daughter, fall in love. As is ever the case in Romantic drama, their love triumphs over the hatred between their peoples and their contrasting social status. Aida pursues a characteristically 19th century objective: that of creating a spectacle performance, akin to French grand opéra, in which scenes of pomp and splendour deploying a large orchestra and chorus reproduce the magnificence of Ancient Egypt. But Aida is much more than this, for it is a lyrical, intimistic opera as well.

Forty-five minutes before each performance, an information session about the opera, open to all  members of the audience, will be held in the Foyer.

In some areas of the Gran Teatre del Liceu it is possible to be seated with a partially obstructed view of the stage. The Gran Teatre del Liceu recommends Zone 2 for the finest and completely unobstructed view of the performance. The stage is not visable from seats starting in row 2 of Zone 8.  A monitor is provided for following the performance in this section. Only available for operas.

Juan Diego is considered the belcanto tenor of choice in major opera houses around the world. His expressive, effortless and virtuoso singing, makes him ideal for the operas of Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini. His performances in opera as well as in concert, at the world most important stages, have won him great acclaim by public and critic.

 

Born in Lima, Peru, he studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Lima and at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 1996 he made his oficial debut at the Rossini Opera Festival, in Pesaro (Italy), substituting for the main role who fell ill. He was considered an overnight sensation, drawing attention from theaters like La Scala, where he made his debut the same year, at only 23.

 

Juan Diego has enjoyed great success at theaters such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) in London, Vienna State Opera, Paris Opera, Madrid's Teatro Real, Bercelona's Gran Teatro Liceo, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Zurich Opera, Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Salzburg Festival, etc.
