Zimmermann & Orchestre de Paris: Shostakovich, Sibelius, Mahler
About the Event
Plunge into summer and into a universe of music with conductor Paavo Järvi and the Orchestre de Paris. Järvi brings together three enthralling works in a programme featuring a performance by violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann.
Sibelius' work is one of Finnish mythology. His Lemminkäinen in Tuonela is set in a dark underworld where an English horn evokes the swan which also harkens the arrival in the musical programme of Shostakovich's concerto. Composed in 1949, this masterpiece was kept secret until Stalin's death.
Irony is certainly no stranger to those who love Mahler. The composer's bold juxtapositions linked the serious to the futile and changed easily from gloomy to energetic. Of all of Mahler's symphonies, this is his most humane.
