Una voce in off & La voix humaine: Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona

About the Event

Poulenc and Montsalvatge's operatic works about absence and women.

Gran Teatre del Liceu presents these two pieces by Xavier Montsalvatge and Francis Poulenc performed by the stunning voices of María Bayo, Ángeles Blancas, Vittorio Prato and Antonio Comas.

Montsalvatge's 'Una voce in off' and Poulenc's 'La voix humaine' are linked by factors other than the influence that the latter exerted on the Catalan composer. In both works, an absent character is pivotal to both the plot and the emotional balance of the main female figure. Montsalvatge wrote an anti‐Romantic manifesto, a sort of parody of bel canto. While Poulenc, based on a text by Jean Cocteau, drew on a wide variety of musical idioms to convey each successive phase in the psychological evolution of a woman who refuses to accept the harsh truth.
