As part of this concert series in Brussels, the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège and cellist Alban Gerhardt perform selected works by Gulda, Josef, Johann and Richard Strauss under the baton of Christian Arming at the Centre for Fine Arts.
About the concert series
Although he is only 40 years of age, Christian Arming already has many years of artistic experience behind him. A former music director of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and currently, since 2003, music director of the New Japan Philharmonic, he was trained by Leopold Hager and has worked closely with Seiji Ozawa. For his second season at the head of the Liège Royal Philharmonic, his programming focuses on the late 19th century and the 20th century.
"The music of this period is very important because these are works that deal with questions about our daily life," he says. Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, Rakhmaninov's first two piano concertos, and Mahler's Fifth Symphony are among the highlights of the season. There will also be an original New Year concert: "Among other works, I have chosen Friedrich Gulda's Cello Concerto. Everyone knows him as a superb pianist, but he was also an excellent composer, who drew inspiration from Austrian folk music, as did Josef Strauss and indeed Richard Strauss for the waltzes in Der Rosenkavalier, which are also on the programme." A concert informed by an enlightened vision, based on similarities between the works that transcend different genres and fashions.
