Rousset & Les Talens Lyriques: Monteverdi's Orfeo, Salle Pleyel

About the Event

It comes as no surprise that the first opera in history was based on the myth of Orpheus attempting to rescue his Eurydice by charming the guards of Hell with his musicianship; what composer could resist such a metaphor?

When he composed the work in 1607, Monteverdi was already a known master of the art of the madrigal, having written five books of them; these marked the musical transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque and exemplified the era’s esthetic of music as the servant of the text. This oldest opera in the repertoire will be performed at the Salle Pleyel in a concert version by conductor Christophe Rousset and his Talens Lyriques—with an energizing cast whose average age is under 30.
