Odysseus: Komische Oper Berlin

About the Event

The Komische Oper Berlin presents Claudio Monteverdi's opera Odysseus in a version by the composer Elena Kats‐Chernin who has woven in some tango à la Piazzolla as well as Oriental and West African tones.

After 20 years of warfare and wandering, Odysseus returns to his hometown, where his wife Penelope has been doggedly resisting the advances of persistent suitor…

Concentrating in almost Brechtian style on the most important elements in this, the second part of his Monteverdi trilogy, Barrie Kosky groups the musicians around the acting area and leads the protagonists into a narrow space without any possibility of retreat. He portrays the difficult reunion of two alienated lovers along with their yearning for a place of sanctuary.

"The Komische Oper at its best… Beauty that brings tears to the eyes," [Süddeutsche Zeitung].

Drama per musica in one prologue and three acts [1640/ 2012]. Libretto by Giacomo Badoaro. German text version by Susanne Felicitas Wolf and Ulrich Lenz.
