Madama Butterfly: Oper Leipzig

About the Event

Visit the Oper Leipzig and enjoy the beautiful and touching story of Madama Butterfly, an opera which Puccini himself described as his favourite and the best of all his works.

The Western world arrives in a Japanese society still very much characterised by strict manners and customs in the shape of the US naval officer Pinkerton. The marriage that Pinkerton enters into with the young geisha Cio‐Cio‐San, nicknamed 'Butterfly', is merely one of convenience and an exotic adventure to him. But for Cio‐Cio‐San, it means the biggest hope of her life. Fascinated by the air of another, freer world that surrounds her lover, she is willing to break all her ties. She still firmly believes in Pinkerton's return to Japan long after he has left. His visit three years later results in a tragedy.

In original language. With German surtitles.

A Japanese tragedy in three acts. Libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. Based on the play by David Belasco and John Luther Long.
