Oper Leipzig

Leipzig, Germany

The new structure of the Leipzig Opera, With its long vertical lines and pleasing architectural shapes and details, reopened in 1960 after suffering complete destruction in 1943. The site itself has been the scene of key events in German musical history for more than 300 years – from the time of Bach and Telemann to remarkable Wagner productions, the world premiere of Brecht and Weill’s famed Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, and contemporary triumphs.

The Opera offers approximately 300 performances each season, ranging from the Baroque to the present moment, and is the third oldest opera house in Europe. The magnificent Gewandhaus Orchestra serves as the instrumental ensemble of the Leipzig Opera, an indicator of the uncompromising artistic quality of all productions at this great institution. As you marvel at the beauty offered to all the senses, feel the grand, centuries‐old tradition that is the Leipzig Opera.
