La Fille Mal Gardée: Frederick Ashton

About the Event

La Fille mal gardée is the oldest action ballet in the French repertoire and at the same time the first modern one. Frederick Ashton's choreography is replete with humor, tenderness, and gaiety, giving new life to Jean Dauberval's pastoral.

First performed at Bordeaux’s Grand Theatre just days before the French Revolution, the success of La Fille mal gardée was immediate, and the work quickly travelled across Europe and the United States. This breezy, cheerful work unfurls in the countryside and tells of Lise's thwarted love for Colas. For the first time, the storyline does not involve gods or ancient heroes. Instead it recounts a tale by miming the action.

La Fille mal gardée returned to the Palais Garnier in 2007 in Frederick Ashton's version, created for London’s Royal Ballet in 1960.

Fabulous! From picking up the ticket at the box office to the magnificent seat in this wonderful theatre. The seat was close enough to the stage to be able to see all the facial expressions so that was an extra bonus. A great service
