Jordi Savall, La Capella Reial de Catalunya & Hespèrion XXI

About the Event

“Music,” explains Jordi Savall, “has constantly accompanied mankind in times of war as well as in times of peace.” It is what sets the cadence for the soldiers’ footsteps as they march toward the front, and it is what celebrates the peace treaty after all of the weapons have been spent.

Jordi Savall and his ensemble explore these two sides of music, at once bellicose and pacifying, across the repertoire of a century from the Thirty Years' War until the Treaty of Utrecht (1613‐1713). Whether an anonymous Turkish march evokes the invasion of Hungary by the Ottoman Empire, or a motet by Lully celebrates the peace reached between France and Spain in 1659, all of the selected works parade the history of Europe to the rhythm of conflicts and truces

This concert is part of the War and Peace Concert Series I: October 8‐12.
