Death in Venice: Teatro Real in Madrid

About the Event

In 1912, Thomas Mann's novel Death in Venice gave expression to the eternal pursuit of the canon of ideal beauty. Sixty years later, Benjamin Britten transformed the work into an opera.

In his last opera, with a musical universe of colors and textures, Britten uses a palette of colors and textures to portray the drama of writer Gustav Aschenbach’s existential and aesthetic crisis. The stylized staging by Willy Decker, who describes the piece as “fascinating, full of ambiguity and misunderstandings”, underlines the intellectual and erotic tension that consumes the protagonist.
