Gottschalk's The Last Hope was apparently improvised by the composer in Cuba, and its melody and "Wagnerian" harmonies have since been taken as a Christmas piece.

Pianist Regina Albrink partners this piece with Chopin's Grande valse brillante in E‐flat major, as well as two Etudes and a Nocturne. Mozart's Sonata in A major (featuring the famous "Turkish March") and Schumann's favourite of his own compositions – Kreisleriana – make the afternoon complete.
