Beethoven's First Piano Concerto: Concertgebouw

About the Event

Hear acclaimed pianist Jonathan Biss in a programme also featuring two works written almost exactly 100 and 200 years later.

Beethoven's concerto in C major, op. 15, was the second such piece that the composer wrote, but was published as the "First Concerto" in 1798. 101 years later, Arnold Schoenberg pushed boundaries of chromaticism and harmony in his still lushly‐romantic work for string orchestra Verklärte Nacht ("Transfigured Night").

A century after that, the Swedish composer Rolf Martinsson wrote his own tribute to Schoenberg, quoting Verklärte Nacht, and giving it the title A.S. in Memoriam.

Jonathan Biss takes the solo part in Beethoven's concerto, while the the Nederlands Kamerorkest is directed by Gordan Nikolić.
