Ballet Nacional de España, Sorolla: Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona

About the Event

An evening filled with light, freshness and motion.

Ballet Nacional de España pays tribute to brilliant Spanish painter Joaquim Sorolla with a program featuring works by Paco de Lucía, Juan José Colomer, and Enrique Bermúdez, among others.

A chance to enjoy the peninsula's most significant folk dances, along with other creations of Spanish classical dance and the bolero and flamenco schools.

The Ballet Nacional de España was founded 35 years ago and had Antonio Gades as its first director. Its subsequent evolution has aimed to maintain interest in all Spanish dance styles, combining the modern with the traditional. Since 2011 it has been headed by Antonio Najarro.

'Sorolla' is a program inspired by 'Visión de España' (1911), a collection of paintings commissioned by the Hispanic Society of New York from Joaquim Sorolla, in which the brilliant painter from Valencia expressed his personal vision of Spain, its customs and dances. Franco Dragone's stage direction, the costumes designed by Nicolas Vaudelet, and the score by the Valencian composer Juan José Colomer all reflect the light, freshness and motion of Sorolla's paintings.
