Angelich, Järvi & Orchestre de Paris: Brahms

About the Event

In this concert, Paavo Järvi brings together two Brahms separated by twenty years. Heralded as the new Beethoven, Brahms hesitated to compose his first symphony; his initial attempt resulted, surprisingly, in the dramatic First Piano Concerto.

The true First Symphony took longer to appear. With its powerful opening, underpinned by the fateful timpani, the work is a landscape of changing light, passing through cloudy moments and ending in the beams of the final movement.

The effervescent Academic Festival Overture has been played by the Orchestre de Paris on only one previous occasion: with the recently departed Maestro Wolfgang Sawallisch during his complete Brahms symphonic cycle in 1999.
