ABOUT THE EVENT
The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra makes its long-awaited debut in Grafenegg, with star violinist Nikolaj Znaider.
Under the direction of Music Director Riccardo Chailly, they will exclusively play works by Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who left his mark on Leipzig’s music scene when he himself directed the Gewandhaus Orchestra. His music, both charming and witty, counts among the most beautiful works of the Romantic period.
There’s a special feeling in the air when you step through the gates of Grafenegg to plunge into the open atmosphere of this Music Festival. Here is a fascinating combination of past and future, tangible in the contrast between the old castle and the modern open-air stage, Wolkenturm. On mild summer evenings, performances are in the open; in poor weather, the Auditorium opens its doors.

Later principal conductors included Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Bruno Walter, Vaclav Neumann, and from 1970 to 1996 Kurt Masur. In 1998, Herbert Blomstedt took over the post until 2005 and will be succeeded by Riccardo Chailly.
