About the Event

Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" is presented by the Volksoper Wien!

The opera in two acts is situated in the original version in Nagasaki, around 1900. Before the American lieutenant Pinkerton returns to his home country, he marries Cio Cio San, known as Madama Butterfly. While he is only looking for temporary pleasure, Butterfly brings a big sacrifice; for her marriage to a foreigner she is damned by her family!

Months later, Butterfly is waiting for Pinkerton's return. But it is only years later, when he is coming back to Japan with his then legal American wife with the attempt to take his and Butterfly's three year old son back to the USA. After realising her situation, Madama Butterfly sees only one way to rescue her honour…

"Madama Butterfly" is one of the most popular operas by Giacomo Puccini. The Norwegian director Stefan Herheim created a very interesting and magic production!
