About 'Stephansdom'
First construction on this site began in 1137 and the St. Stephen's Cathedral (German: Stephansdom) has remained an integral piece of the fabric of Vienna ever since. The Cathedral that you see today, both Romanesque and Gothic, was built on the ruins of two earlier churches and is now the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna. One of the most sacred buildings in Vienna, it has borne witness to many of the important events in the nation's history. The artful, multi-colored tile roof of St. Stephens is one of the city's most well known and beloved symbols.
