Sergei Prokofiev himself described his opera as a "mixture of fairy tale, amusement and satire". This season, the Vienna Volksoper is presenting Ernst Theo Richter's successful Hamburg production from 2002.

The Prince has fallen victim to a serious case of hypochondria, and only laughter can save him. Taking pleasure at somebody else's misfortune cures him, but also puts a curse on him, making him fall in love with three oranges. One of the fruits is embodied by Ninetta, whom he ultimately marries.
