The Gambler
ABOUT THE EVENT
For the first time, Sergei Prokofiev's opera "The Gambler" (Igrok) will be performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. The libretto was written by the composer himself, based on Dostoyevsky's famous novel.
The young Alexei Ivanovich, tutor for a Russian family residing in Germany, falls in love with Polina. But the beautiful woman only laughs when Alexei confesses his love to her, and she convinces him to leave and bet for her at the casino. Hesitant to gamble, Alexei goes to the casino and wins a great sum of money in a short time. He returns to Polina in the hope that she will change her mind, but he only finds a young but unhappy woman...
The opera was first staged in French in Brussels in 1929 - an earlier version written in 1916 was never performed. Prokofiev's operas have not attracted the attention they deserve - with few exceptions, such as "The Love for Three Oranges" - but are now undergoing a revival. The avant-garde text and music portray the characters' obsession with obtaining money through gambling with cruelty and sarcasm.
