The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest and most influential orchestras in China and throughout Asia. The music director is Long Yu. The orchestra was founded in 1879 as the "Shanghai Municipal Public Band" with the French flutist Jean Remusat as conductor. After the foundation of the People's Republic of China the orchestra changed its name several times, until it received its present name in 1956. The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra has featured some of the world's most famous artists throughout its history, including violinist David Oistrak, and pianist Halina Czerny-Stefańska. In more recent years the orchestra has worked with such top artists as the renowned tenors Jose Carreras (1998) and Placido Domingo (2002).
