Music Summer: EUYO, Davis

At this year's Grafenegg Music Summer, the European Union Youth Orchestra performs works by Sibelius, Tippett and Beethoven, under the baton of Sir Colin Davis.

Great orchestral music is a speciality of both Sir Colin Davis and the European Union Youth Orchestra. From the treasures of the extensive Romantic orchestral repertoire, the young musicians first conjure up the symphonic poem "Tapiola" by Jean Sibelius, in which a forest ghost from Finnish mythology plies his dreadful trade.

The ritual dances from Sir Michael Tippett’s opera "The Midsummer Marriage", which the English composer based on Mozart’s "Magic Flute", are a rare delight to the ear. The classical highlight of the evening is, without doubt, Beethoven’s masterly "Eroica".
