About 'Festung Hohensalzburg'
Reigning majestically over the rooftops of Salzburg, Hohensalzburg Fortress is the largest, fully-preserved fortress in Central Europe. Built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard, the fortress was considerably expanded by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach (1495-1519), and its exterior has remained substantially unaltered since then. The fortress' interior was richly decorated: Intricate Gothic wood-carvings and ornamental paintings decorate the Golden Hall and the Golden Chamber. Hohensalzburg Fortress offers visitors a stunning view of the city of Salzburg and its environs.
How to get to 'Festung Hohensalzburg'
The Fortress is accessed from Kapitelplatz through the Festungsgasse; visitors can choose between the funicular, departing every 10 minutes, or taking a 30-minute walk to the top.
