ABOUT THE EVENT

The renowned Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra will play their second guest performance in Grafenegg, this time under the direction of US American star conductor Marin Alsop.

Besides Brahms’ fourth and last symphony there will be music by Samuel Barber, who may be considered a soul mate of his German colleague. The charismatic percussionist Colin Currie will play James MacMillan’s popular concerto «Veni, Veni, Emmanuel».

There’s a special feeling in the air when you step through the gates of Grafenegg to plunge into the open atmosphere of this Music Festival. Here is a fascinating combination of past and future, tangible in the contrast between the old castle and the modern open-air stage, Wolkenturm. On mild summer evenings, performances are in the open; in poor weather, the Auditorium opens its doors.

The Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra can trace its roots back to the nineteenth century, to the times of Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen. However, it was not until 1919 that the orchestra was established as an independent and permanent organization under its present name. At their home venue since 1977, Oslo Concert Hall, the orchestra gives 60–70 symphonic concerts a year, most of which are broadcast by the national radio. The Oslo Philharmonic also presents chamber concerts on a regular basis.
