La Traviata

About the event 'Musica a Palazzo: La Traviata'

Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata has strong ties to Venice where it was premiered at the Gran Teatro La Fenice on March 6, 1853.

Musica a Palazzo sets the action of Verdi's opera within an authentic historic Venetian palazzo. This contemporary interpretation is closely related to Verdi's own thoughts on dramatic opera. In Verdi's time, the brazen realism of La Traviata caused a scandal at its first performance.

The first act begins in the Portego (central hall) where the spectators will be situated in the role of Violetta's (Traviata) guests. At this joyful celebration, Violetta and Alfredo will be introduced to each other and fall in love. The second act takes place in the Sala Tiepolo whose beauty and intimacy are the perfect setting to appreciate the subtlety of the “interior dialogue” of the characters and to be moved by her conflicts. The drama of Violetta’s illness and death is consummated in the Camera da letto (bedroom with alcove).

Not even the extraordinary 18th-century stuccos can divert attention from the emotional intensity of Verdi's music: the voices of the singers, in close intimacy, resonate deep within the audience!

From April 1st, during the interval of the performance and surrounded by the magical setting facing the Grand Canal, Musica a Palazzo offers you a glass of Prosecco, soft drinks, and fine liqueurs.
