About the event 'Music and Art in Papal Rome'
In the splendid architecture and acoustics of St. Maria dell’Orto, the Schola Romana Ensemble offers a unique opportunity to hear the early Roman liturgical music that once filled Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.
This fascinating programme highlights the precious artistic treasures of the location, in combination with the early Roman liturgy. The itinerary “Music and Art in Papal Rome” proposes a guided visit of the church St. Maria del’Orto, in the heart of the ancient and characteristic district of Trastevere.
The archaic mysticism of the Gregorian Chant, the most ancient form of Occidental music, will alternate with the brilliant Roman polyphony that flourished in Papal Rome. The composers on the programme are the Sistine Chapel masters: Palestrina, Victoria, Carissimi, Pitoni, Agazzari. They all contributed, like Michelangelo, Rafael, Bernini and the other geniuses of the time, to the establishment of Rome as the "Eternal City".
