ABOUT THE EVENT

The Deutsche Oper Berlin presents Gaetano Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" in a production by Filippo Sanjust.

Lucia di Lammermoor is set in Scotland during the violent clan wars. In the male-dominated society sisters and daughters are used as pawns in securing military alliances. The same fate awaits Lucia, who seeks haven in madness. She has already pledged herself in love and marriage to Edgardo, the mortal enemy of her brother Enrico. Enrico wants to see his sister wedded to the family's powerful ally, Arturo. Filippo Sanjust's production and costumes are an homage to the traditions of romantic set design.

The chorus of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, one of the worlds largest choruses, has been led and formed by prominent conductors and chorus masters. Walter Hagen-Groll led the chorus for nearly 50 years, establishing its excellent reputation. Marcus Creed and Karl Kamper were two of his successors as chorus master. William Spaulding has been first chorus master since the beginning of the 2007/2008 season. The success of his work with the chorus is shown by the awards of "Best German Chorus" for in 2008 and 2009.
