ABOUT THE EVENT

Two works by the young and the aged Richard Strauss, respectively, form the framework of the concert programme examining opposite pairs like victory and defeat, and gain and loss.

Starting from the effusive tone poem "Ein Heldenleben", the programme turns to Bach’s "Musikalisches Opfer" in an adaptation by Anton Webern. Shortly before the end of the Second World War, Strauss wrote his "Metamorphosen": a swan song about a culture in ruins. In self-critical reflection, the composer also considered the gloomy piece a "reverberation of my whole past life".
